Place : Ay. Loukas, Ay. Loukas isl., Kolona
: Kythnos isl.
GENERAL
A Doric triglyph and metope of marble (Fig. 2), and remains of ancient structures were found to the South of the church of Ay. Loukas, on the homonymous island, between the bays of Myrsinia (to the East) and Kolona (to the West) (Fig. 1).
MONUMENTS
Traces of ancient structures can be seen to the South of the church of Ay. Loukas, on the homonymous small island. These could belong to the Late Roman or proto-Byzantine period (a marble door lintel dates in the 5th c. AD). These remains may lie upon earlier remains of the Archaic or Classical period.
FINDS
A Doric triglyph/metope of marble was visible in the court of the small church until the late 90ies (Fig. 2), the block is no longer in place). This could belong to a public building - probably a temple - of the Archaic or Classical period. In the surroundings, especially to the South of the church, sherds dating from the Classical to the Early Byzantine periods are observed.
CHRONOLOGY
The sherds in the area date from the Classical to the Early Byzantine periods.
IDENTIFICATION
It is possible that there was a sanctuary here in the Classical or later periods, and subsequently, an Early Christian Basilica (the latter attested by some architectural membres and some architectural remians in situ).
RECORDS
First visited in the early 90ies by A. Mazarakis Ainian
