Place : Ay. Anna hill, Paroikia
: Paros isl.
GENERAL
Scanty remains of a temple of Apollo, are preserved on a terrace above the hellenistic Asklepieion upon the small hill of Agia Anna southwest of the town of Paros (Paroikia), in close distance to the sea.
MONUMENTS
Parts of two walls of a perivolos were uncovered while architectural members of a temple were found scattered at the site (Doric capital, parts of triglyphs, the cornice, coffers and one cymatium).
FINDS
Clay vessels
Inscriptions (IG XII.5, 147-153)
Marble kouros
CHRONOLOGY
The architectural members, found scattered in the area of the second terrace, belong to a temple of the 4th c. The inscriptions date from the 6th to the 4th c. and the kouros to the 6th c. The discovered geometric and archaic sherds suggest that the activity at the site dates back to the 8th-7th c.
IDENTIFICATION
According to the inscriptions, and the kouros discovered in the area, the divinity worshipped on the second hill terrace was Apollo. The identification of the sanctuary with the Pythion, the existence of which is only attested by an inscription (IG XII.5, 110), is not certain.
