GENERAL

Halfway between the stadium area and the Sanctuary of Apollo is the Archegesion or the Sanctuary of Anios, mythical archegetes and king of Delos. The Delians exclusively participated to the cult of Anios. MONUMENTS The sanctuary comprised a peristyle, a paved courtyard with wooden columns surrounded by a peribolos wall. An ash-altar was found at the courtyard. A group of three chambers is located south and east of the peristyle court. These buildings would have been used for ritual dining. FINDS Votives include many inscribed sherds, as well as a torso of a kouros. The statue is made of Parian marble and dates to the middle of the 6th c. CHRONOLOGY The sanctuary dates to the 6th c. B.C. but was remodeled during the Hellenistic period. The peristyle court and the central banquet hall belong to the early phase. The peribolos wall was added to the sanctuary during the early 5th c. The paving of the court, as well as an inner, low, marble peribolos belong to the Hellenistic Period. IDENTIFICATION The dedication of the sanctuary to Anios is well attested by almost 400 inscribed sherds, found in the sanctuary, that bear the name of the hero.
